Schmitz, Victor I.
Victor I. Schmitz, 71, of Quasqueton, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 12, 2013, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.
Victor was born Jan. 6, 1942, in La Porte City, Iowa, the son of Henry W. and Frances E. (Kaufman) Schmitz. He was raised in the Winthrop, Iowa area and a 1960 graduate of Washington High School in Cedar Rapids. Shortly following his graduation he became employed with the Quaker Oats Co. in Cedar Rapids, working in the Oat Milling Department for 39 years before his retirement in 2000. In 1963, Victor was married to Doris Lee Myers; she died in 1993. On May 12, 2001, he married Patricia Ann Lewis at the Union Church, Quasqueton.
Victor loved his family, especially spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He umpired many Little League games over the years where he became known as “Pops” to many. In his younger years Victor was an accomplished bowler and an outdoorsman, enjoying fishing and bow hunting. In his retirement, he became a gentleman's pool player and avid golfer, enthusiastically playing at the Winthrop Golf Course on Thursdays and at St. Andrews Golf Course in Cedar Rapids on Mondays.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Schmitz, Quasqueton; six children, Sandra (Steve) McMurrin, Otterville, Tammy Schmitz, Oelwein, Rodney Schmitz, Quasqueton, Dallas (John) Schroeder, Farley, Valerie (Jeff) Dahl, Harmony, Minn., and James (Angela) Knox, Tipton; 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Loren (Lois) Schmitz, Cedar Rapids.
Victor was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Doris Lee (Myers) Schmitz in 1993; a son, Dean Schmitz; and three brothers, Kenneth, Vincent and Bill Schmitz.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Winthrop, with the Rev. Kevin Jennings officiating. Burial will be in the Quasqueton Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home.
