Schmitz, Marie
Marie Schmitz, 93, of Walker, died Wednesday, March 16, 2011, in West Village Care Center, Independence. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Walker, by the Rev. Ardel Barta. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today at the parish hall, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Burial: Sacred Heart Cemetery, Walker. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Walker.
Survivors include her sisters, Frances Weber and Eileen Knight, both of Walker; and many nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ted, John and Edward; and one sister, Adeline Kress.
Born June 1, 1917, in Walker, Iowa, Marie was the daughter of Charles and Mary (Michael) Schmitz. She was a rural schoolteacher for six years before moving to Seattle, where she worked for Boeing. Later she returned to Cedar Rapids and worked for Rockwell for over 30 years.
She was a Catholic Daughter, an accomplished seamstress, and volunteered for many organizations. She enjoyed traveling and considered her nieces and nephews her family.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
