Schmidt, Oren G.
Oren G. Schmidt was born Nov. 28, 1918, near Homestead, Iowa, the son of Louis T. and Caroline Hopp Schmidt. He died Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness at the age of 90 years, 7 months and 25 days.
He was baptized Dec. 22, 1918, and confirmed March 20, 1932, at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead. He attended St. John Lutheran School. Oren was united in marriage to Minerva Anna Hudepohl on March, 12, 1941, at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. He lived his entire life in the Homestead area where he enjoyed farming and doing mechanical work on his Minneapolis Moline tractors. Oren was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and the Homestead Area Minneapolis Moline Collectors Club.
He is survived by his son, Stan Schmidt and wife Karen of Homestead; a granddaughter, Kristin Schmidt-Solberg and husband Jason of Homestead; two great-grandchildren, Cody and Chloe Solberg; a brother, Harlan Schmidt of Cedar Rapids; and a sister, Darlene Von Ahsen of Amana.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Minerva in June 2003; an infant son, Jerry Dean; an infant sister, Marlene Velma; a brother, Wayne Schmidt; and a sister, Arlene Sandersfeld.
A Celebration of Life service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead. Pastor Wayne Woolery will officiate. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg.
A memorial fund has been established for St. John Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Interparish School.
