Schmidt, Maxine C.
Maxine C. Schmidt, 87, of Monticello, died Thursday, June 16, 2011, at the Anamosa Care Center following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, with interment in Oakwood Cemetery. The Rev. Edwin Moreano will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Surviving is her son, Kevin of Coralville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerhard in 1996; two brothers and six sisters.
Maxine Camilla Tracy was born June 1, 1924, in Goose Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Irvin and Anna (Steffey) Tracy. Maxine received her education in the Miles, Iowa schools. She later worked at Gibson Manufacturing in Bellevue, where she made Monarch washers and dryers. Maxine Tracy and Gerhard Schmidt were married Oct. 20, 1956, in Maquoketa. The couple lived in Monticello, where Maxine did day care for many families. She cooked at Camp Courageous for nine years and then worked in housekeeping at John McDonald Hospital. Maxine loved to sing and even recorded one of her songs. She always loved being called Grandma by the many children she had cared for over the years.
