Schmidt, Harlan H.
Harlan H. Schmidt, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, May 30, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center. Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha by the Rev. Daniel Krueger. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Graveside service: 2 p.m. Friday at St. John's Cemetery, Homestead.
Survivors include his son, Ronald (Marleen) Schmidt of Orlando, Fla.; two grandchildren, Tamara Kappler of Cedar Rapids, and Scott (Janelle) Schmidt of Winfield, Ill.; three great-grandchildren, Kyle, Cassidy and Braden; and a sister, Darlene Von Ahsen of Amana.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Verona; his daughter, Barbara; two brothers, Oren and Wayne; and a sister, Arlene.
Harlan was born at home on Oct. 10, 1921, the son of Louis and Caroline (Hopp) Schmidt in rural Homestead. On Jan. 4, 1942, he married Verona Anna Marie Ficken in York Township, Iowa. He farmed for 25 years, worked at the Cedar Rapids airport for 20 years and then managed the 6th Street Car Wash for 10 years.
Memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church in Harlan's memory.
