Schmidt, Bernard 'Bernie' A.
Bernard “Bernie” A. Schmidt, 67, of Washington, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City following a lingering illness. A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Washington United Methodist Church, with Pastor Jim Stiles and Father Troy Richmond officiating. Visitation will be held Monday from noon until 7 p.m. at Beatty Funeral Home in Washington, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Bernard August Schmidt was born Sept. 4, 1944, in Riverside, Iowa, the son of Otto August and Agnes (Rotenburger) Schmidt. He was united in marriage to Donna Lins on Aug. 14, 1971, at First Baptist Church in Washington.
He was a member of the Washington United Methodist Church, Wayland Antique Tractor Club, Isaac Walton League and Singles in Agriculture. He enjoyed watching Hawkeye women's basketball, playing cards with his friends, going on picnics, fishing, and teaching his grandsons to hunt and to drive.
Survivors include his son, Chuck (Jackie) Schmidt of Cedar Rapids; two grandsons, Cody and Dakota Schmidt; three brothers, Carl Schmidt of Illinois, William (Beth) Schmidt of Florida and Leroy (Judy) Schmidt of Wisconsin;, two sisters, Marie Gallagher of Wisconsin and Marilyn (Richard) Musser of Solon; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Bernie in death were his parents; his wife, Donna in 2002; and one brother-in-law, Fergal Gallagher.
A memorial fund has been established for Four Oaks and Marr Park.
