Schlichte, Joseph A.
Joseph A. Schlichte, 91, of Dyersville, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, at Oak Crest Manor, Dyersville. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville, where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be held at 5 p.m. and an American Legion service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville. Burial: church cemetery, where military honors will be accorded. The Rev. Noah Diehm will officiate.
Joe was born Nov. 25, 1919, in Dyersville, Iowa, the son of John B. and Anna (Willenbring) Schlichte. He married Germaine M. Olberding on Oct. 7, 1941, in Dyersville. Joe was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army from 1942-1944. He worked for the Dubuque Packing Co. for 27 years before retiring in 1982.
Joe was a member of American Legion Post 137 for over 60 years, Knights of Columbus member and an usher at church. He enjoyed watching his grandkids play ball, spending time with friends, and playing cards.
Joe always knew where everyone was because he memorized license plates. Sundays were spent with family, serving sausage and cheese, and gathering the family for dinner, drinks and cards. Surviving are his daughter, Lois (Roger) Klostermann of Dyersville; son, Marvin (Mary) Schlichte of Cedar Rapids; son-in-law, Loras Rausch of Dyersville; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; siblings, Bernard (Ardella) Schlichte of Edgewood and Verna Klostermann of Dyersville; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gerald Olberding, Ray (Gen) Olberding, Delbert (Marge) Olberding, Donald (Darlene) Olberding, Eileen Olberding, Alma Schlichte-Willenborg and Mildred Schlichte.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Germaine; daughter, Linda Rausch, on May 30, 2003; siblings, Alvin Schlichte, Clarence (Julia) Schlichte, Elmer Schlichte and Lorraine (Mark) Pins; and in-laws, Robert Olberding, Irma Olberding, Catherine Griffin, Mercedes (Gilbert) Singsank and Art Klostermann.
