Scheufler, Paul Bernard
Paul Bernard Scheufler, 89, of Hutchinson, Kan., died Nov. 21, 2013, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He was born Feb. 12, 1924, near Belpre, Kan., the son of Charley and Mary (Spacil) Scheufler. He graduated from Belpre High School in 1942. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the 328th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, Company “G” of the 3rd Army under General Patton. He was on the front line in the Battles of Ardennes, Rhineland and the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he was a military policeman in Occupied Austria.
He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, VFW, American Legion and the American Agriculture Movement.
He farmed near Belpre until he moved in 1951 to Rice County, where he farmed until he retired in 1991, moving to Hutchinson.
On Sept. 23, 1950, he married Elva Lois Leonard in Hutchinson, who preceded him in death Feb. 25, 2013.
Survivors include two sons, Lee (Margaret) Scheufler, rural Sterling, Kan., and Ted (Debra) Scheufler, Tempe, Ariz,; a daughter, Sue (Larry) Ihde, Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Charles, Chandler, Ariz., and Edward, Belpre, Kan.; sister, Bernice Smith, Williamsburg, Kan.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Josephine Fisher and Thelma Negley.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Hutchinson, with Father Joe Eckberg presiding. Burial will follow in Lyons Cemetery, Lyons, Kan., with military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Parish rosary will be 6 p.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Hutchinson, Kan. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Holy Cross Catholic Church or the Wounded Warrior Project c/o Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, KS 67502.
