Scheetz, Oscar William
Oscar William Scheetz, 91, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at the Solon Nursing Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, 4200 First Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be held after 10:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial will take place at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Cosgrove, Iowa.
Oscar is survived by his wife, Roberta; sons, Oscar W. Scheetz Jr. (Tammy) of Glenrock, Wyo., and Gary Scheetz (Joan) of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter, Sandra Gross (James) of Chico, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Donna Miller; brother-in-law, Don Laughlin; five stepchildren and their families; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Scheetz; daughter, Suzanne Everette; his parents; brothers, Ray, Dean, Walter and Leo; and sisters, Catherine, Lorene and Mary.
Oscar was born August 12, 1919, in Iowa City, the son of John J. and Adeline (Berry) Scheetz. He attended St. Patrick's High School in Iowa City. In 1941, he was deployed with the 34th Division, 109th Medical Battalion, Iowa City National Guard Medical Unit to North Africa. He served 4 ½ years in the service.
Upon returning from World War II, he was employed by Bausch and Lomb Inc. He was with the company for 45 years and served as manager of the company offices in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.
He was married to Martha Burke (the mother of his children), Dorothy Jones and Roberta J. Harding.
Memorials may be directed to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Iowa City, Iowa; Solon Nursing Care Center (SNCC), Solon, Iowa; and Iowa City Hospice.
The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the kind and patient caregivers at SNCC and to Carol Tippe, Parish Nurse, St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Iowa City, for her wise and comforting council.
