Schafer, Vernita
Vernita Schafer, 84, of Monticello, died Thursday at Jones Regional Medical Center from complications of Parkinson's disease. Funeral services will be held at 10 Tuesday morning, May 11, at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, o where friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Daryl Larson will officiate at the services. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello.

Surviving are three children, Ralph Schafer, Monticello, and Janiece Meyers and Grant Schafer, both of Anamosa; three grandchildren, Carey (Deanna) Glick and Kelly Glick, both of Anamosa, and Stacey (Brock) Barber, Lisbon; and two great-grandchildren, Zander and Griffin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Willis in 1978.
Vernita Mae Vernon was born Aug. 22, 1925, in Elliott, Iowa, the daughter of Edgar and Marie Karns Vernon. Vernita graduated from the Monticello Community Schools with the class of 1943. She worked for her grandfather at the Monticello Shoppers Guide while in high school and later at John McDonald Hospital. Vernita Mae Vernon and Willis Schafer were married March 4, 1946, at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Monticello. The couple farmed in the Monticello and Anamosa areas until 1964, when they moved to the Schafer family farm near Langworthy. Vernita worked at Polo Plastics from 1969 until 1993 when she retired.
Vernita was a member of Order of the Eastern Star for 65 years, and a past Worthy Matron and past Worthy Advisor to Rainbow Girls. She enjoyed polka dancing and square dancing. She also enjoyed spending time in her garden and canning.
