Schaefer, Doris Mae
Doris Mae Schaefer, 92, of Masonville, formerly of Manchester, died at the Hiawatha Care Center on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at First Lutheran Church in Manchester, with Pastor Jean Rabary officiating. Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester. Interment: Greenwood Cemetery, Masonville.
She was born Jan. 27, 1918, in rural Delaware County, the daughter of Clyde and Minnie (Zebuhr) Evans. Doris was educated at the Lamont High School, received her teaching certificate at the Cedar Falls Teachers College and eventually earned her B.A. degree at Upper Iowa University.
On June 3, 1939, Doris was united in marriage to Arthur G. Schaefer at First Lutheran Church in Manchester. Two children were born to this union. She taught at several rural Delaware County schools and ended her career teaching at West Delaware School District for 38 years, retiring in 1980. Arthur was killed in action on Nov. 25, 1944, during World War II.
Doris was a member of First Lutheran Church in Manchester. She was an avid bowler and loved to play golf. She also loved traveling with her friends, playing bridge, bingo, and other card games.
Survivors include two children, Sandra (Ron) Charlier of Hiawatha and Robert (Ellen) Schaefer of Sun City, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Kim (Rich) Mason of Hiawatha, Tammie (Jason) Hoover of Cedar Rapids and Steve (Susan) Charlier of Clarendon Hills, Ill.; two stepgrandchildren, Joey Turner of Phoenix and Jackie (Bruce) Legge of Phoenix; seven great-grandchildren, Scott (Genee), Jennie, Shawna, Evan, Alli, Maddi and Grayson; three stepgrandchildren, Jennifer, Nickie and Elise; two great-great-grandchildren, Makayla and Quinn; and two sisters-in-law, Verla Schaefer and Naida Schaefer.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sister, Arlene M. Dickin; a granddaughter, Angela Schaefer; a daughter-in-law, JoAnn; a sister-in-law, Amanda; and three brothers-in-law, Albert, Walter, and Kenneth.
The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to all the employees at the Hiawatha Care Center for their excellent care, love, and compassion they gave to Doris and her family.
