Saunders, Helen
Helen Saunders, 92, of Marion, formerly of Hopkinton, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First United Church of Hopkinton, with interment in the Hopkinton Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Hopkinton.

Surviving are three sons, Russell (Jenny) of Westminster, Colo., Tom (Nellie) of Cedar Rapids, and Robert (Connie) of Rochester, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Jon, Kate, Jennifer, Jason, Andy and Abbie, Dave, Misty and Mitch; six great-grandchildren, Blake, Kaycee, Isabel, Jakob, Mitch and Jaciana; and a brother, John (Blanche) Newland of Austin, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russell; and two sisters, Elizabeth Hart and Dorothy Miller.
Helen L. Newlin was born April 19, 1917, at Viola, Iowa. She was the daughter of Harry and Edna Griffith Newlin. She received her education in the Viola Schools, graduating with the class of 1934. She went on the attend beauty school in Cedar Rapids. She first started working as a beautician in Mount Vernon before moving to Hopkinton.
Helen Newlin and Russell Saunders were married July 20, 1945, at the Viola Methodist Church. The couple made their home in Hopkinton. Helen worked as a beautician in Hopkinton, until she retired in 1968. Helen and Russell moved to Village Place in Marion in 2004. He preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 2009. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, U.M.W. and the Miriam Circle.
