Sauers, George W.
George W. Sauers, 57, of North Liberty, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010. Memorial Mass: 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas More Church, Coralville. Graveside Services with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Lensing's Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Rd., Coralville, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. and after 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Thomas More Church, the Alzheimer's Association, or the Johnson County Crisis Center Suicide Prevention Program.
George was born Jan. 27, 1952, in Bloomington, Ind., the son of Robert and Madeleine French Sauers. He served in Vietnam with the U.S. Army. On Dec. 27, 1972, George married Mary Lanoue at St. Patrick's Church in Iowa City. George was a correctional officer at the Medical Classification Center for 30 years, retiring in 2009. He graduated with a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Iowa; was a member of St. Thomas More Church; and enjoyed coin collecting, studying Spanish, reading, playing pool, cooking, and spending time with his family. He devoted his life to being a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, and granddaddy. They will remember him for his infectious laugh and the love he showed them.
George is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Beth Sauers (Josh Tepfer), and their daughter Olive, and Katie Sauers (Pete Barker), all of Chicago; his mother, Madeleine of Coralville; his brother, Robert John Sauers (Dr. Oliver Bowman) of Charleston, S.C.; in-laws, Andre and Laura Lanoue of North Liberty; brothers-in-law, Greg (Kim) Lanoue of St. Louis and Michael (Nancy) Lanoue of West Des Moines; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
