Sarah Hobbs was born on March 17, 1933, in Bowling Green, Mo., to the union of Robert and Rena Smith. She was preceded in death by her loving parents and her son, Carl Hobbs; her sister Betty Clark; and brothers Jewell, Milford, and Bill Smith.
Sarah moved to Cedar Rapids in the early years of her life, where she received her Associate degree from Kirkwood Community College. She lived there until 1983 and then moved to Chicago, Ill., where she retired from Marshall Field’s Department Store in 1996.
On Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023, God sent His angel to claim His own.
Our mother, Sarah, was a wonderful and loving mother and one of the strongest and bravest women to ever walk this earth and who gave her all to her family. We will never be able to fill the space left behind by her. We were truly blessed to have her as the head of our family.
She is survived by five sons, Gary Hobbs of Omaha, Neb., Steve of Aurora, Colo., Darrell (Angie) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Randy Hobbs (Susan) of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Kirk Hobbs (Lisa) of Bloomington, Minn.; two daughters, Cheryl Hobbs-Poole (Thomas) of Houston, Texas, and Crystal Hobbs-Houston (Melvin) of Killeen, Texas; and two brothers, Leon Smith of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Bruce Smith of Los Angeles, Calif.
Sarah not only leaves her children to cherish her memory but 25 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren. Also, nieces, nephews and other relatives, and friends.
Homegoing Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church with burial to follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the Church. Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids are in charge of arrangements.
