SARA ELLEN SMITH
Marion
Sara Ellen Smith, 52, of Marion, passed away Monday evening, June 13, 2016, at Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Visitation for Sara will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 16, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also take place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Springbrook. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at noon Saturday at the church in Springbrook with burial in the Parish Cemetery to follow.
Sara was born Nov. 12, 1963, in Zanesville, Ohio, the daughter of Dale D. and Dorothy I. (Thompson) Eppley. She married Sean Smith on March 1, 1986, at First United Methodist Church in Zanesville. Sara graduated from Zanesville High School with the class of 1982 and from DeVry Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in computer information systems in 1986. Sara held many different jobs throughout her life, although her family and friends were her first love and priority.
Sara had a special gift of caring for others, especially the elderly and those most in need. She spent countless hours driving others to appointments and visiting homes, hospitals and nursing homes. More than providing support, Sara provided friendship and love.
Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Sean of Marion; her children, Duane of Cedar Rapids, Ryan of Madison, Wis., and Felicia of Marion; three sisters, Chris (Rich) Maxwell of The Villages, Fla., Jane (Tom) Yinger of Bushnell, Fla., and Amy (John) Nerswick of Fort Mitchell, Ky.; and many nieces, nephews and beloved in-laws.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
The family would like to thank everyone who supported Sara and the family with prayers, visits, meals, cards, etc. A special thank you to the professionals at Hall Perrine Cancer Center in Cedar Rapids and the Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha for their compassionate care.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice House of Mercy or Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Springbrook.
