Sandra Sue (Olmstead) Svoboda, 73, of Marion, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her three children, Dustan (Angie) Svoboda of Cedar Rapids, Shelly (Robert) Young of Traer and Malinda Svoboda (Colby McIlhenny) of Cedar Rapids; special friend, Don Twite of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Jordan, Olivia and Emma Svoboda and Brittany, Robert and Sara Young; and siblings, Lloyd Olmstead of Garnavillo and Janet Merta of Marion.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters.
Sandra was born June 24, 1941, the daughter of Vern and Lula (Crawford) Olmstead, in Webster City, Iowa. On Sept. 23, 1967, she was united in marriage to David J. Svoboda at Immaculate Conception Church, Cedar Rapids. They later divorced. Sandra was a farm wife for many years. She then worked as Tama County Farm Bureau assistant, where she retired from.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, knitting, baking, cooking and gardening on the farm.
She will be greatly missed for her sense of humor.
