Sanders, Elsie E.
Elsie E. Sanders, 91, of Palo, died Friday, April 29, 2011, at Northbrook Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids following a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, by Ken Graham. Burial: Palo Cemetery. Friends may visit from 4 until 8 p.m. Tuesday and after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Elsie is survived by her children, Darlene (Everett) Squires of Center Point and Lee (Marlene), Richard and Thomas (Terry) Sanders, all of Palo; daughter-in-law, June Sanders of Marion; 17 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband L. Jay; son, Bob; great-grandchildren, Lex and Rory; six brothers and three sisters.
Elsie Ellen was born June 25, 1919, in rural Palo, the daughter of James Earl and Emma Ellen (Spicer) Usher. She married L. Jay Sanders in July 1937 in Vinton. He died in 1979. Elsie worked at Eye Brothers Grocery in Palo, National Oats, and then at Collins Radio for 20 years as an inspector.
She loved fishing, traveling with her sisters, bowling, and flowers.
Memorials may be directed to the building fund for Palo United Methodist Church or Hospice of Mercy.
