Samuel E. Hague, 71, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Dec. 23, 2022. He was the second son born on June 18, 1951, to Donald and Twila Hague in New Castle, Pa.

Sam attended Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, where he studied business and met his beautiful wife, Diane L. Linquist. He worked for many years in Sioux City, Iowa, as an accountant (in his words a “bean counter”) before becoming executive vice president at United Fire and Casualty in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Sam was well-liked by his colleagues and fostered a sense of community with his team-approach mentality and light-hearted humor.

Sam was an independent and fierce soul. He loved a good adventure, whether it be international business trips or annual family vacations or his solo minivan road trips to explore the national parks; he loved it all. Sam was a mover and a shaker! Through the years, Sam enjoyed fishing with his kids and grandkids, biking around town even in the winter months, playing card games with lots of banter and “table talk” (Cribbage, Spades and Euchre!), attending bible study groups, watching his grandsons play sports, attending Iowa basketball games with his son, and golfing with his college buddies. Anyone that knew Sam knew that he was the most frugal man when it came to himself, but the most generous man when it came to others. A man with a big heart who loved a big discount! Sam will most be remembered for his humor, belly laugh and ability to make anyone feel welcome when entering a room.

The last two years, Sam had a fierce battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) and eventually Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). He did not go down without a fight! Sam lived well-beyond the doctors prognosis timeline and enjoyed every minute of it. Our family got an extra 1.5 years with him and the memories created during that time will be cherished forever. We are extremely grateful for all the caregivers who touched his life over the last two years.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and wife.

He is survived by his son, Jeremy Hague and wife Alyssa Hague in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; daughter, Becky Hague in Minneapolis, Minn.; daughter, Kelli Christakis and husband Kosta Christakis in Tempe, Ariz.; brother, Robert Hague in Ashville, Ohio; and grandchildren, Linden Hague, Carver Hague, Penelopi Christakis, Arianna Christakis and Georgia Christakis.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023, at Salem United Methodist Church, 3715 33rd Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404, followed by a reception.
