Ruth L. Walters, 92, of Iowa City, died Thursday, July 30, 2015, at the Solon Nursing Care Center.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ruth Walters Memorial Fund. Online condolences can be sent to her family at www.gayandciha.com.
Ruth Louella Coulson (Nelson) Walters was born March 3, 1923, in Grundy Center, Iowa, daughter of Delbert and Gretchen (McDonald) Coulson. She graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1941. From 1942 to 1958 she lived in Cedar Falls and in 1958 moved to Iowa City where she was a longtime resident. She married Willard "Curley" Walters on June 19, 1959, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. She worked for Pepperidge Farm and Owens Brush. She was one of Iowa City's first parking meter maids, and later worked as a water meter repairperson for the city of Iowa City.
She was a charter member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church as well as a member of the World War II Memorial Society.
Her family includes her children, Theodore "Ted" Nelson (Donna) of Cedar Falls, Larry Nelson (Beverly) of Coralville, Jerri Bruns (Del) of East Peoria, Ill., Rick Walters (Beverly Williams) of Iowa City, Mike Walters (Barb) of Iowa City and Beverly "Bev" Nelson (Larry) of Coralville; grandchildren, Boe and Shay Bruns, Mieka Deeter, Fred Walters, Yvonne and Wylie Walters, Steven Nelson and Kimberly Bergman, Ruth Beemer and Jim, John and Marnie Bates. Her family also includes 20 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Virginia "Ginny" Bates; brothers, Don, Wilfred "Willy," and John and Paul Coulson; and sister, Margaret "Marnie" Ashby.
