Ruth D. Waldron, 88, of Waukon, died Saturday, April 19, 2014, at her home in Waukon. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery, both in Waukon. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 3:45 p.m. Scripture service.
Memorials may be given to St. Patrick Church or St. Patrick School.
Ruth Darlene Waldron was born May 14, 1925, in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Hugo and Edna (Sobolick) Huber. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Benedict Catholic Church, attended rural Decorah schools and graduated from Decorah High School in 1942. After high school, she attended AIB in Davenport for two years before returning home and working as a telephone operator. On May 21, 1946, Ruth married John Leroy Waldron at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah. Ruth and John raised their family in Waukon. They operated the local Dairy Queen restaurant during the 1956 season. Ruth had a long career of her own as an associate for Leschensky Insurance Agency for over 20 years and later as a secretary at Farm Bureau Insurance for several more years.
Ruth was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the VFW Auxiliary. She volunteered for a number of things at St. Patrick School and also helped with bingo at the Good Samaritan Center and she enjoyed playing euchre at the wellness center for the Veterans Memorial Hospital Auxiliary fundraisers. She loved to spend time with John fishing on the Mississippi River, taking long rides in the countryside or attending area dances. Ruth also enjoyed flower gardening, sewing and embroidery, shopping and playing cards with her friends.
Survivors include her four children, John J. (Annette) Waldron of Marion, Mark V. Waldron (Angela McComas) of Lakeland, Fla., Anne Marie (Peter) Fuchsteiner of St. Cloud, Minn., and Mary Diane (Jack Cirkl) Mercil of Cedar Rapids; 13 grandchildren, Shannon (Tom) Grommon, Erin Waldron, Mark (Missy) Waldron II, Mary (Gregg) Leitzel, Matt (Nicky) Waldron, Michael (Allison Rockefeller) Waldron, Adam (Jessica) Fuchsteiner, Carolyn (Koleman) Brenner, Dana (Ray) Bolinger, Sarah Regan, Michael (Amber) Mercil, Maggie Mercil and James (Stephanie Kopecky) Mercil; 13 great-grandchildren, with another expected soon; a brother, Earl (Theresa) Huber of Cedar Rapids; a sister-in-law, Ruth Huber of Decorah; brothers and sisters-in-law, Maxine
Howell of Fort Worth, Texas, Jeanne (Dick) Roggensack of Waukon, Marie (Roger) Sullivan of New Lenox, Ill., and Cheryl Waldron of Waukon; and numberous nieces and nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, who died in 2006; a son-in-law, Jim Mercil; a brother, Conrad Huber; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Vernon (Beck) Waldron, Bill (Marge) Waldron, Stan (Lois) Waldron, Milo
Howell and Paul "Butch" Waldron.
