Ruth Clarice Engelhardt Strathman, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, June 16, 2014. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church by Pastor Steven Knudson. A visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Survivors include a brother, Roy (Karen) Engelhardt; stepchildren, Bobby Netolicky, Jean Wagner, Phillip Netolicky, Michael (Mary Jo) Strathman, Marge (Peter) Gaudio, Henry (Patty) Strathman and Carol Ann Fulmer; and many stepgrandchildren. nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents.
Ruth was born May 8, 1932, to Roy and Lillian Engelhardt. She grew up on the family farm in St. Olaf, Iowa. She graduated from Elkader High School and then went on to graduate from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids. Ruth worked in the field of nursing for several years. She was united in marriage to Robert Netolicky on Dec. 30, 1971. He preceded her in death. After Bob's death, Ruth remained in Cedar Rapids.
She was very involved in various social activities and with her family. She met and later married Lawrence Strathman on Jan. 3, 1991. He preceded her in death. She and Larry lived a lifetime of memories in the 12 short years they were married. They enjoyed traveling, friends and family. Ruth loved playing the organ, piano, singing and the accordion.
She was loved by her many friends and relatives and was a terrific wife, mom, grandma, aunt and friend. She was known to those who loved and knew her best as Foofie.
The family would like to especially thank her Home Instead caregivers. They treated Ruth just as family and as always, made sure she was comfortable and well taken care of. They also would like to thank all her wonderful neighbors who looked out for her and cared for her. You are all much appreciated. The family also would like to extend a special thanks to all the doctors and nurses who cared for Ruth, with a special thanks to Dr. Thomas Schroeder and his staff.
