Ruth E. Rogers, 96, of Monticello, died Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at Monticello Nursing & Rehab Center.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello, with a parish vigil service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 16, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Paul Baldwin will officiate.
Ruth was born Dec. 25, 1919, in Worthington, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Ida (Lehmann) Greif. She was raised in Worthington and educated at St. Paul Catholic School. On June 4, 1940, Ruth was united in marriage to John A. Rogers of Cascade at St. Paul Church in Worthington. Together they farmed for 26 years in the Worthington, Monticello and Hopkinton areas, moving to Monticello in 1966. John preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1990.
Ruth attended Dubuque University and taught in Dubuque County before her marriage. In 1972, she graduated from Upper Iowa University with a bachelor's degree in education and psychology. She taught full time in Dyersville, Monticello and other Jones County schools in elementary education. Ruth also sold World Book encyclopedias, volunteered at Senior Dining, Meals on Wheels and was active in many programs at Sacred Heart Parish. Her favorite pasttime was dancing, attending dances at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago in her younger years and as many as three to four dances a week in her senior years.
Ruth is survived by her son, Richard (Loretta) Rogers of Summerfield, Fla.; daughters, Joan Capoferri of West Chester, Pa., Alice Denniston of Orlando, Fla., and Melanie (Duane) Vaske of Pella; seven grandchildren, Marc (Ara) Rogers, Andrew Capoferri, Tara Capoferri, Ryan (Brooke) Denniston, Ashley (Adam) Frisch, Brooke (John) Nickerson and Brandon (Cynthia) Vaske; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Jane (Larry) Guilford of Monticello; and in-laws, Edwin Kleitsch of Cascade, Bill Rogers of Petersburg, Ill., and Sister Susann Rogers, OSF, of Dubuque.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Ida Greif; her husband, John; siblings, Lambert Greif, I. Michael Greif in infancy, Ivo Peter Greif, Rita Butzow Kennedy and Freida Greif; and a grandson, Justin Vaske.
Memorials are preferred to Senior Dining in Monticello or Sacred Heart School.
