Ruth B. Muir, 97, died Dec. 13, 2021, at University of Iowa Hospitals. She had been a resident at the Oaknoll Retirement Residence for several years.
A Celebration of Life memorial service for Ruth B. Muir, a pastel and etching artist, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, in the Heiden Room at Oaknoll. Anyone attending the celebration will need to be screened upon entering Oaknoll and will need to be masked. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Society or the University of Iowa Art Museum.
Ruth B. Muir was born 1924 in Washington, D.C. to Charles and Adelaide Brooks.
Ruth attended Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., where she received a B.A. degree in visual arts. In 1979 she was awarded a M.A. in rehabilitation counseling at the University of Iowa.
She married Robert Muir in California in 1947. Ruth has been a resident of Iowa City since 1948 when her husband accepted the position of assistant professor in the University of Iowa Botany Department.
From 1958 to 1966 she served as a program advisor and hostess at the UI Memorial Union. From 1976 to 1985, Ruth coordinated the Senior Citizen Substance Abuse Program for the Mideastern Council on Chemical Abuse (MECCA) and served as a patient representative at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. From 1986 to her retirement, Ruth was a research assistant at the University of Iowa Department of Psychiatry. Volunteer activities included serving as a volunteer and as a member of the Iowa City Crises Center Board of Directors and a Docent at the UI Museum of Art. She also coordinated the 1975 Unitarian Universalist Summer Programs. Her extensive global travels included participation in the 1975 United Nations Women's Conference held in Nairobi, Kenya. She represented AAUW at 1992 Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro.
Ruth is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Society. Other memberships include the Iowa UN Association (Iowa UNA), American Association of University Women (AAUW), National League of American Pen Women and Arts Iowa City.
Her pastels and etchings have been shown at the Iowa City Senior Center, Midwest Bank, Barnes & Noble Books, Summit Street Gallery and Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids.
She is survived by her son, Robert Muir of Kinross, Iowa; daughters, Martha Muir Johnson, Poulsbo, Wash., and Heather Muir, Battlecreek, Mich.; and a brother, Dana Brooks, State College, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Muir; sister, Carolyn Keyser; and her parents.
