Russell O. Sherman, 84, of Robins, passed away Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, in Gulf Shores, Ala. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time. Inurnment will be at a later date in Conroy.
Survivors include his wife, Judy of Robins; his children, Sheri (Jeff) Elliott of Eugene, Ore., and Sandra (Steve) Shean, Lorie Sherman and James (Cynthia) Sherman, all of Cedar Rapids; stepchildren, Jeanice (Greg) Blood, Janette (Phil) Gorman and Julie (Clark) Harberts, all of Cedar Rapids, and Joyce (Mike) Svoboda of Vinton; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Vernon (Marjorie) Sherman of Marengo, Lyle (Ruby) Sherman of Middle Amana and Richard (Carolyn) Sherman of St. Ansgar.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Roma Sherman; infant daughter, Judy Sherman; brothers, Earl and Lee Sherman; and two sisters, Thelma Karr and Cleo Petrzelka.
Russ was born April 2, 1930, in Oxford, Iowa, son of Dewey and Mildred (Slaymaker) Sherman. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1949. Russ served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon discharge, he returned to Cedar Rapids, where he worked for Rockwell Collins, retiring after 30-plus years.
In 1953, he married Roma Trimpe; she later passed in 2001. Russ married Judy Palumbo on July 31, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Church in Hiawatha.
Russ was soft-spoken, kind and very proud of his families. He was an avid Cubs and Hawkeye fan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Legion or St. Elizabeth Church in Hiawatha.
