Russell Francis Rieder, 86, died Friday, April 22, 2016, at Keystone Nursing Care Center after a short battle with cancer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Newhall with Father Craig Steimel as celebrant. Interment of cremains will be at St. Patrick and St. Paul Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be at St. Paul's Catholic Church on Monday, April 25, from 4 to 7 p.m.
Russ was born March 30, 1930, in Vinton, Iowa, to Frank and Rose (McCormick) Rieder. He graduated from Newhall High School in 1948 and was in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He married Marilyn Junge on Oct. 3, 1950, at Immaculate Conception Church in Van Horne.
He was an auto mechanic and owner of Rieder Auto Service in Newhall and enjoyed collecting and rebuilding antique gas engines. In the past, he served as Newhall Zoning administrator and was on the Benton County Conservation board. He was a member of the Newhall American Legion and St. Paul's Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John; and a sister, Delores (Rieder) Clark.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of 65 years; two daughters, Patricia (Paul) Petersen of Durango, Colo., and Janet (Rod) Butz of Waterloo; a son, Doug (Sue) Rieder of Jefferson; his sister, Dorothy (Albert) Schulte of Norway; sisters-in-law, Lois Schlotterbeck and Ruth Junge of Keystone; brother-in-law, Irvin Junge of Keystone; six grandchildren, Dana Petersen, Matthew Petersen, Malissa (Butz) Petersen, DuWayne Butz, Ryan MacLagan and Brent MacLagan; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given in his name to Camp Courageous or Newhall American Legion.
