Russell C. Hagerman, 94, of Indianapolis, Ind., died June 19, 2015. Russell was born March 6, 1921, in Toddville, Iowa, to Lon and Bessie Hagerman. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1941, where he served as an airplane mechanic and pilot. Russ returned to the University of Iowa after his military service, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering.
Russell married Georgia Jane Richardson of Fredericksburg, Iowa, on Dec. 4, 1942, in Fredericksburg. Following retirement, Russ remained active by entering the hardware business. This enterprise involved his entire family in the sale of hardware leading to the opening of a family owned and operated hardware store in New Palestine, Ind.
Russell enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, woodworking, feeding the backyard birds and watching sports, particularly the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Colts and the Pacers. He will be remembered for his optimistic disposition, his sense of humor, his generosity and the love and devotion he gave to his family.
Russ served on the board of the Humane Society of Indianapolis and was involved with Young Life and the Executive Service Corps.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his two brothers, Roy and Richard Hagerman.
He is survived by his children, Virginia (Hagerman) Baysden and her husband, Bud, of Shelbyville, Ind., and Clark Hagerman and his wife, Tessie, of Fairland, Ind.; his granddaughters, Laura Christensen of Indianapolis, Ind., Angela Stackhouse of Indianapolis, Sarah Baysden of Denver, Colo., and Maria Kuhn of Manilla, Ind.; three great-granddaughters, Adelyn, Caroline and Vivian; his sister-in-law, Sally (Richard) Hagerman of Cedar Rapids; several nieces and nephews, all in Iowa; and his good friend and companion, Carol Johnston of Indianapolis, Ind.
