Russell Thomas Coleman was born May 9, 1945, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Evangeline (Smith) Coleman. He graduated from Coggon High School in 1963, and later graduated from Loras College in Dubuque. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and did one tour in Vietnam. On Nov. 18, 1978, Russell was united in marriage to Catherine Titel in Cedar Rapids. They had lived in the Williamsburg community since 1979. He worked for Iowa Workforce for 30 years and retired at age 55. Russell was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and baseball card collector. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, bowling and playing cards. Russell passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at Mercy Iowa City at the age of 73 years.
Russell is survived by his wife, Catherine; a daughter, Shannon (Wayne) Gooden of Moravia; two granddaughters, Katy and Madalyn Gooden; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Coleman of Cedar Rapids; two nephews, Duane Coleman of St. Louis, Mo., and Michael Coleman of Cedar Rapids; two nieces, Theresa Thompson of Van Horne and Laura Coleman Henderson of Cedar Rapids; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald Coleman.
A prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg followed by visitation until 7 p.m. A private family service will be held later. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Coggon with military rites. A memorial fund has been established for Camp Courageous.
