Ruby Mary Matt, 81, of Des Moines, formerly of Garnavillo, died Friday, March 4, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center West Lakes in West Des Moines.
She was born Dec. 30, 1934, in Springdale, Ark., the daughter of Victor and Flossie (Toy) Barron. Ruby received her early education in Springdale and later graduated from McGuinness Catholic High School in Oklahoma City, Okla. Ruby furthered her education at St. Mary's College in Leavenworth, Kan., and finally received her nursing degree from Providence Hospital Nursing School in Kansas City, Kan.
Ruby was a skilled cook who enjoyed reading and family gatherings. She filled her life with kindness and prayer and good actions, especially over her 37 years as a registered nurse at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. She was most proud of her six children whom she raised with her loving husband, Melvin.
Ruby is survived by her husband of over 58 years, Melvin; six children, Barbara (Paul) Baeuchle of Leavenworth, Kan., Ed (Jackie) Matt of West Des Moines, Elaine (Brad) Schaffner of Northfield, Minn., Denise (Michael) Nash of Indianapolis, Dan Matt of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Sharon (Chris) Matt Atkins of Metuchen, N.J.; nine grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Willis of Charlotte, Fla., and Betty (Walter) Tabary of Destrehan, La.; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Arlie, Homer and J.D. Barron.
Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, 001 S. Industrial Park Rd., Garnavillo, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 6. Funeral services will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, at 11 a.m. Monday, March 7, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Friends may call after 10 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Garnavillo.
In lieu of flowers and all styles of sympathy, the family requests memorials designated to American Cancer Society.
