ROY WANDLING

Roy A. Wandling, 86, of Waukon, died Saturday, April 19, 2014, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon with the Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon and one hour before the service Wednesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church and Northgate Care Center.
Roy Albert Wandling was born Dec. 21, 1927, at his parents' home in rural Iowa County, Iowa. He was the son of Albert and Ruth (Fisher) Wandling. Roy served in the United States Marines from 1946 to 1947 and again in 1950 during the Korean War.
On Feb. 22, 1948, he married Dorothy Danker at St. John's Lutheran Church in Keystone. The couple made their home in Benton County, before moving to Waukon in 1960. Roy did farm work before becoming a feed salesman for MoorMan's Manufacturing (now ADM) in 1960. After retiring in 1986, Roy sold cars for Daley's in Decorah and Pladsen's in Waukon, he also drove the VA van for trips to Iowa City.
Roy was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, where he served on many committees and was a past council president. He was a charter member of the Allamakee Sportsman's Club and was also a charter member of the Waukon Lions Club, where he participated in a lot of community service. Roy also belonged to the American Legion. He enjoyed reading and taking his kids boating. He was very much a people person and loved talking with everyone.
Roy is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Waukon; five children, Thomas (Toni) Wandling of Decorah, Cynthia (Loren) Fiet of Waukon, Carol (Thomas) Wittenberg of Onalaska, Wis., Gene (Tamara) Wandling of O'Fallon, Ill., and Alan (Barb) Wandling of LaCrosse, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; one stepgrandson; nine great-granddaughters (and the 10th due any day); one sister, Irene Raub of Cedar Falls; and one half brother, Lewis Rabe of Marengo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; half brother, Wayne Rabe; half sister, Velma Pease; sister, Rachel Selk; and one granddaughter, Lacey Wandling.
Honorary casketbearers are Kasey and Ryan Wandling, Denise Blake, Cathie Fiet, Amy Jeglum, Ann Tieman and Rachel, Britney and Paige Wandling. Casketbearers are Brian Jeglum, Jesse and Brodie Wandling, Bryce Wandling, Russ Tieman, Nic Wittenberg and Tanner Formanek.
