Roxy Scott Ventling, 83, of Urbandale, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at Prairie Chapel Cemetery in Marion. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Iles-Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.
Survivors include her children, Kim (Wayne) Bruns and Pam (Todd) Flesch, both of Urbandale, Amy (Del) Hester of Duluth, Ga., and Doug (Tracy) Ventling of Altoona; brothers-in-law, Robert (Mary) Ventling of Coal Valley, Ill., and Terry (Wanda) Ventling of West Des Moines; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Roxy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gary; and her sister, Donna Lynn Hansen.
Growing up on a farm outside Marion, Iowa, Roxy attended school in a one-room schoolhouse on her family's farm and later graduated from Marion High School. She attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science in nursing.
On Aug. 28, 1956, Roxy married Gary Ventling. Together they had four children. They raised their family in Urbandale. Roxy remained in Urbandale following her husband's death in 2003, until moving to assisted living in 2015.
Roxy's life was centered around her faith. She had a generous, loving and caring spirit, always believing in the goodness of those whose paths she crossed throughout her life. Roxy loved to travel and experience other cultures to the fullest and raised her children to be strong advocates for social justice. She found great joy in writing, philosophy and discussing current affairs. Roxy was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan, devoting many hours to following her teams. She advocated for her patients throughout her nursing career, whether at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, private medical practices, Polk County Visiting Nurses Association, or the final 18 years of her career at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines. She retired from nursing in 1998, though she never stopped being a nurse.
