Ronald "Ron" L. Young, 79, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 13, 2014, surrounded by his loving family at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Services: 11 a.m. Friday, May 16, at Salem United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids, conducted by the Rev. John Louk. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Military rites will be conducted. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Ron's wishes were that everyone dresses casual.
Survivors include his wife, Liz Young of Cedar Rapids; children, Reed Young of Cedar Rapids and Rod (Joan) Young of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Ryan (Theresa) Young, Brad (Marie) Young and Nathan Young; sisters, Lois (Wil) Feickert and Loretta Wesbrook; brother-in-law, Marlin Bohlen; sister-in-law, Cathy Reed (Michael) Bromley of American Fork, Utah; cousins, Al Ralston, Ivan Ralston, Merle Ralston, Yvonne Laporte, Fred Dennis and Cecil Dennis; special cousin, Everett (Linda) Young; numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews; and special friends, Roger Blietz, and Larry
(Rita) Tharp.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Judith Bohlen and Keith Young.
Ron was born March 18, 1935, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Clarence James and Olive Marie (Smith) Young. He worked at Quaker Oats for 26 years. On Oct. 24, 1957, he married Elizabeth "Liz" Reed in Kirksville, Mo.
Ron served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was honored to serve his country during the war. Ron was extremely proud of his family. He loved kids and dogs. Ron enjoyed fishing with his grandsons.
Ron was a member of the Moose International Chapter 515, the Marion American Legion Post No. 298 and the Salem United Methodist Church.
The family would like to extend a sincere thanks to Dr. Marc Wilkinson, Dr. Kevin Murray, Dr. Martin Wiesenfeld, the staff at the Perrine Center, Mercy
Medical Center 3rd and 7th floors and Hospice of Mercy.
Instead of flowers, memorials are requested to Hospice of Mercy or the building fund at Salem United Methodist Church in Ron's memory.
