Ronald "Ron" L. Ostling, 81, of Iowa City, passed away Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020, at Independence Village in Waukee, Iowa. Ron chose to be cremated and will be buried in St. Joseph Cemetery, 1122 N. Dodge St., Iowa City. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 17. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service is handling arrangements.
Memorials in Ron's name can be directed to Suncrest Hospice in West Des Moines,
the Animal Rescue League of Iowa or Friends of the Animal Center Foundation in Iowa City.
Ron was born March 25, 1939, in Des Moines and was raised by his mother, Jane and Harold Hogendorn. He attended schools in Urbandale, Iowa, and later earned his GED (Good Enough Diploma). Ron served in the U.S. Air Force as an airman second class beginning in 1956 through 1960, when he was honorably discharged.
Ron worked for Allied Systems as an auto transport driver, working out of Ankeny, Iowa, from 1983 to 1985 and out of the FORD factory in Kansas City, Mo., from 1988 to 2007. In retirement, Ron enjoyed "working" mowing golf courses in several communities that he lived in. Ron met and later married Barbara Skay on July 16, 1983, in Iowa City.
He is survived by sons, Keith Ostling (Jen) of Truro, Iowa, Mark Signs (LeDon Sweeney) of Iowa City and Avin Ostling (Mary) of Kansas City, Mo.; grandchildren, Jessica Duggins (Dylan), Garrett Ostling (Jessica) and Hank Ostling; and a great-grandson, Logan Duggins; stepsons, Jayme Skay (Kami) of Iowa City and Tim Skay (Sherri) of Carlisle, Iowa; stepdaughter, Mary Forbes (Scott) of Princeton, Ill.; and other grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara; daughter, Leslie "LuAnn" Schlossenberg; sister, Judy Ayers; and stepsons, Todd Skay and Curtis Skay.
As this obituary was being written, the Kansas City Chiefs were ahead 33-27.
