Ronald “Ron” Duane Garrett, 78, of Fairfax, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully at Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha, August 10, 2024, with family at his side. Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, February 24, 1946.
Visitation Service will be held at Cedar Memorial Wednesday, August 14, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Memorial Service will be held Thursday, August 15 in the Chapel of Memories at 10:00 a.m., followed by graveside interment in the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Ron worked as a lineman for Alliant Energy (formerly Iowa Electric) and was a proud “A” member of IBEW Local 204 for over 40 years. For several years he took great pride in fighting for workers’ rights when he was elected to serve as the Locals Business Agent. He then started a new chapter in 1999 and became an integral part in the expansion of ULCS/ITC to the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area, before fully retiring in 2012. No doubt he will be guiding and watching over lineman from above.
Ron was always on the move. He was extremely social and well-known for his engaging conversation and storytelling. In his younger years he could be found playing 16” softball and bowling among other activities. In more recent years he was often riding his Harley Trike with his friends through the Hawkeye HOG Chapter, where he served on the E-Board and was the Road Captain for many years. Often heading out on weekend rides, long trips and going to Sturgis several times. He enjoyed regular luncheons and golf outings with good friends from his Elementary and Washington High School days. Never missing the chance to catch up with former coworkers at retiree breakfasts or over lunches. Ron enjoyed following his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their activities. He loved sharing with others their accomplishments, but he took even more pride in the good people and parents they have become.
He also loved sports and when he wasn’t supporting a member of his family, he was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and an avid baseball fan, particularly the Cubs.
Ron leaves behind his loving wife of 34 years, Nadine, his 3 children; Patrick, Jeanne and Brent (Tina) Wilson. 9 Grandchildren; Jory Garrett Sr., Casey (Steven) Strausbaugh, Ty Garrett, Bryce (Colleen) Merchant, Nathan (Jordan) Merchant, Camdyn Wilson, Lillian Wilson, Hayley Wilson, Brady Wilson, 5 Great-Grandchildren; Angelique Garrett, Jory Garrett Jr., Connor Brossman, Kip Merchant, MaCoy Merchant, a sister Patricia (Larry) Watson, nephew Jake Watson, brother-in-law Ken Ladage (Paula) and first wife Kathy Garrett. Also, left behind are his entertaining and very spoiled pups Reeva and Izzy.
He was preceded in death by his parents Twylla “Fern” and Garold Garrett, brothers-in-law Jim and Steve Ladage.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mercy Hospital and Oldorf Mercy Hospice House for the exceptional care they provided Ron during his short illness.
A memorial fund will be established. You may direct donations to the family at this time.
