Roger William Smith was born August 8, 1946, in Anamosa, the son of William and Dorothy (Meade) Smith. He married Carol "Sue" Collman on September 1, 1979. He served his country in the United States Navy and later continued to serve in the United States Army. He was employed as a commercial fisherman in Nova Scotia, a merchant marine, a correctional officer at the Anamosa Men’s Reformatory, and would go on to work as a dispatcher and driver for Westside Transport.
He loved to cook and welcome people to his home. He enjoyed listening to live music and attending open mic events. He fought a long brave battle with Parkinson's Disease, but he always kept a twinkle in his eye. He will be remembered as an interesting man and everyone loved to hear his stories. He will be missed by the many people in his life.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carol “Sue” Smith, his son Jason (Lizz) Smith, a grandson Nikk Beach, a sister-in-law Karen Smith, nephews Joseph (Anna) Connelly, Troy (Lynn) Smith, and Jeff (Jessica) Smith, and great-nieces and -nephews Catherine, Caitlynn, Sam, Hayden, and Tristen.
