Roger Duane Kalinay was born March 8, 1940, in Chelsea, Iowa, to Louis and Lucille (Plesek) Kalinay. He grew up in Chelsea and graduated from Chelsea High School. He enlisted in the military in December 1959 and served as a combat engineer until his honorable discharge in February 1962. In August 1968, he was united in marriage to Ellen Olson in Chelsea.
Throughout his life Roger worked as a finish carpenter and master electrician. After moving to Pierre, he became a member of the American Legion and Moose Lodge. He prided himself in all aspects of whatever project he took on, whether a patio for a friend, a bar table at the Legion or a jewelry box for his daughters. He enjoyed woodworking, mallard ducks, watching sports, NASCAR and playing shuffleboard. He particularly enjoyed working in his garden and tending to his roses.
He is survived by three children, Shannon Lodge (Ken Johnson) of Fort Pierre, Dawn DeLorme of Belle Plaine and Lee Kalinay (Amanda) of Marshalltown; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Florence (Leonard) Balvin and Verna (Warren) Brush.
He was preceded in death by daughter, Shawn Kalinay; parents, Louis and Lucille; two brothers, Larry and Raymond "Bud"; and sister, Evelyn Ryan.
