Roger Fred Bolender, 74, of Coggon, Iowa, passed away on Friday, Oct. 13, 2023, at his home. A Graveside Service with military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, at Coggon Cemetery in Coggon. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family with arrangements.
Roger was born on Dec. 12, 1948, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Ralph and Geneva Bolender. He served honorably as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, where he earned his GED. Roger was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, a Combat Action Ribbon, a Vietnam Service Medal, and a Vietnam Campaign Medal. On Dec. 21, 1969, Roger was united in marriage to Kathy Diana Dunn in Coggon. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed camping and working in his woodshop, and sung and played guitar in a band. He always had a cocker spaniel for a companion, most recently, Oreo. Roger will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Roger is survived and lovingly remembered by his two sons, Raymond “Don” (Tammi) Bolender and Jim (Rachel) Bolender, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four granddaughters, Monica, Aryeana, Riley, and Cameron; and one brother, Denny Bolender.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy; his parents; brother, Duane “Bol” Bolender; sister, Pam; and a grandson, Quincy.
