Rodney E. Behrens, 76, passed away on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2023. He was born on Sept. 21, 1947, in Pontiac, Mich., to Erwin and Ellen (Long) Behrens. Rodney graduated from Bennett High School in 1965 and later attended Palmer Jr. College. He dedicated many years of his life to serving as a union representative at Red Jacket Pumps in Davenport, where he eventually retired.
Rodney proudly served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War and was a longtime member of the Lowden American Legion. Throughout the years, he held various offices within the Legion, demonstrating his commitment to his fellow veterans.
Rodney will be fondly remembered for his deep love of baseball. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the sport, meticulously keeping stats on every major league player in his trusty spiral notebooks. He was a devoted fan of the Dodgers and believed that "this year will be their year." His passion for the game extended beyond the stands, as he played in numerous baseball and softball teams. His grandchildren have followed in his footsteps and proudly worn his number, 14, through the years. Additionally, Rodney enjoyed playing in a pool league, euchre, and sheepshead.
Music was another great love of Rodney's life. He shared a special bond with his daughter over the years, introducing her at a young age to Prince's music. Their shared appreciation for Prince's artistry created lasting memories and brought them closer together.
Rodney is survived by his daughter, Brooke (Aaron) Scarbrough of Chesapeake, Va.; his cherished grandchildren, Aaron Scarbrough Jr. and Aubrey Scarbrough; his niece, Michelle Danielson; his nephew, Jeromy Birchfield; and his great-niece, Macalah Danielson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Linda Birchfield.
Visitation will be held at Chapman's in Clarence, Iowa, on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023, from 4 to 6 p.m. A private family graveside service will take place at St. John's Cemetery in Clarence, Iowa, with military rites.
