Robert Shimek, 88, of
Cedar Rapids, died Friday, May 30, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday.
Survivors include a daughter, Jan Borst, and her fiance, Mike Coonrod, of Springville; and two sons, Jeff (Judy) of Walker and Jim (Julie) of Fairfax. He also is survived by four grandchildren, Mike, Michelle, Jennifer and Jill; 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Vera Splinter and Janet Stepp. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; six brothers, George, Paul, John, Frank, Ed and Henry; and one sister, Mary.
Bob was born on April 27, 1926, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Paul and Hattie Buehler Shimek. He married Shirley J. Stepp on April 2, 1950, in Nashua. Shirley passed away in 2007.
Bob worked in sales and retired from Barron Motor Co. after more than 25 years of service. He was a real people person and that was reflected not only in his job but with everyone he met. Bob enjoyed golf, gardening, yardwork and especially the time spent with his beloved family and many friends. His memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
