Robert Carl Shetler of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, Dec. 14, 2015, at the age of 90. He resided at West Ridge Care Center and was at the Higley Mansion Residential Care Facility for over 2 ½ years. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, where a visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Private burial: St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Shetler and Barbara Colberg; his wife, Darlene; his brother, Bill Shetler; and a grandson, Jeff.
Bob was married to Darlene for 59 years. They had four children, six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his children, Deanna Kosman, Shirley Schultz, Cindy Ribble and Steve Shetler; his grandchildren, Justin Kosman, Dave Ribble, Bridget Rinderknecht, Jill Meyers, Trisha Barone and Lindsey Shetler; and his great-grandchildren, Kaylee Ribble, Killian Ribble, Sam Ribble, Jackson Rinderknecht, Madison Rinderknecht, Carolina Rinderknecht, Jayden Meyers, Chloe Meyers, Colby Barone, Delaney Barone, Jeff Barone and Trigg Barone. Other survivors include another daughter, Carol Mitchell and her family, the Ron Mitchell family of Cedar Rapids; his brother's wife, Janann Shetler of Nebraska; and his brother's children, Sheree Truit and Tim Shelter of California. They include many nieces and nephews.
Robert (Bob) worked in sales his entire adult life. He retired from Grainger Company in 1986 after 12 ½ years.
Robert was a member of the Cedar Rapids Family Church and always looked forward to going there on Sunday. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. As a hobby, he refinished furniture. He also volunteered at Mercy Medical Center and ReStore. The Salvation Army and Mission of Hope were dear to Bob's heart.
Robert served in World War II from 1942 until 1946 as a second class petty officer in the U.S. Navy. He worked on radar equipment and served in that capacity.
