Robert E. Schorg, 85, died Oct. 13, 2015. He was a resident at West Ridge Care Center. Funeral services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. A visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Born June 7, 1930, to Delbert and Minnie Schorg, in North Buena Vista, Iowa, Robert moved to Cedar Rapids with his family in 1942. Robert graduated in June 1948 from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids.
Robert worked at Sanitary Farm Dairies from 1946 to March 1969. He enlisted in the Iowa National Guard in 1949 and retired as a chief warrant officer C-W4 in March 1969.
Robert served as mayor in Bertram for three terms in the 1950s. Robert served as Linn County justice of the peace from 1961 to 1963. Robert worked as the Chauffeurs, Teamsters & Helpers Local Union 238 business agent in March 1969.
He served on many boards and committees: United Way, chairman, planning committee, member panel No. 3, member of large-budget committee, Budget Panel Labor Advisory board from 1974 to 1979. Robert was a Labor Union Teamsters No. 238 president from 1978 to 1986. He served on the Cedar Rapids committee for the civic center bond issue and Cedar Rapids library bond issue (three times). He was on the committee for Cedar Rapids airport bond expansion issues.
Robert proudly was Linn County Democratic Party precinct committee person for 15 years. He was inducted into the Iowa Democratic Party Hall of Fame. Robert also served on the Linn County Compensation board from 1978 to 1991 and the Kirkwood Community College Advisory Committee, Foundation board, from 1978 to 1991.
Robert served on Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Committee from 1973 to 1986. He served on the Linn County Affirmative Action committee for the jail. Robert became Local Union Teamsters No. 238 secretary-treasurer in 1986 and retired in November 1991. He raised funds to build the Teamsters Handicap Housing Project that was named after him in 1988.
He also was a member and president of King of Glory Lutheran Church in Swisher for 20 years.
Survivors include his daughters, Linda Schorg, Kathy (Richard Sr.) Cook and Jean Schnell; son, Rob (Dawn) Schorg; grandchildren, Jerome (Amy) Jeremy, Richard Jr. (Doria), Blake (Sara), Nathan, Brittany and Trevor; 14 great-grand-children; sister, Rita Banke; and sister-in-law, Donna Schorg. Also left to cherish his memory are many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda; parents; two sisters, Clara and Rae Jean; and one brother, George.
Robert was a loving and caring father, brother, grandfather and friend; anyone who met him was touched by his generosity.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at West Ridge Care Center and Hospice of Mercy. We would also like to thank Silver Pines Assisted Living, where Dad resided in 2013 before moving to West Ridge Care Center.
