Robert William Sauer, 86, formerly of Bennett, died peacefully, with his family by his side, on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at Prairie Hills Assisted Living Center in Tipton. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday,
Sept. 17, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Tipton. Cremation rites will follow the funeral Mass. Visi-tation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Fry Funeral Home, Tipton, and one hour before the service at the church.

Robert William Sauer was born July 12, 1928, in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Edward and Mae Grete Sauer. Robert was united in marriage to Helen Bernice Unkel at Zion Lutheran Church in Davenport on Dec. 12, 1948. Robert was a farmer, gardener, grandpa, great-grandpa and husband.
He was a past 4-H leader, Conservation Club president, Farm Bureau chairman and worked at Pioneer and Farm Service.
Robert loved his family, farm and was a friend to all. Robert and Helen farmed and raised their family near Bennett for 64 years. For 27 of those years, they wintered in Leesburg, Fla., where they enjoyed fishing and playing cards. They spent a lifetime of sharing their love for each other with their family and friends. Robert was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tipton.
Robert is survived by his wife, Helen, currently living at Prairie Hills, Tipton; five daughters, Sue (Gary) Deerberg of Clarence, Bonni (Doug) Jeffries of Shelbyville, Ky., Sandy (Richard) Lauer of Galena, Ohio, Shari (Rick) Meyer of New Liberty and Roberta (Ken) Myers of Prairie du Sac, Wis.; 15 grandchildren, Michael (Janet) Shotwell, Jonathan (Kylee) Deerberg, Aaron Koch, Andrew Koch, Jenny (Matt) Finley, Matthew Koch, Katie (Joey) Beard, Robert (Michelle) Lauer, Tom Lauer, Jackee Meyer, Devin (Lindsey) Meyer, Dustin Meyer, Ashley Meyer, Marie (Matthew) Neece and Allison (Kaleb) Moore; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edward and Edwin; a sister, Rita Mae; and niece, Joyce McQuady.
A memorial fund has been made to Iowa City Hospice or St. Mary's Catholic Church, Tipton.
The family would like to thank the Iowa City Hospice for its loving care and also the staff and residents of Prairie Hills.
