Robert J. Meyer died peacefully Sept. 4, 2016, at Northfield Care Center, Northfield, Minn.
Robert was born March 25, 1927, to Elizabeth Moffat Meyer and Leon Meyer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After graduating from Franklin High School, he entered the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged December 1946 as Pharmacist Mate 3rd class.
Robert attended the University of Iowa and graduated from medical school in June 1954. After interning in Columbus, Ohio, he returned to Iowa and practiced family medicine in Wellsburg, Iowa, until 1964 when he returned to the university for his residency in anesthesiology.
Dr. Meyer practiced for two years at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines before returning to Cedar Rapids, where he practiced until retirement in 1994. Robert retired in Santa Fe, N.M., until moving to Northfield early in 2016.
Robert married Sally Strother in 1953; they divorced in 1977. He married Allene Burtis in 1979; she died in 2010.
Robert was preceded in death by both parents; sister, Janet Fraser (Jack); and spouse, Allene. Robert is survived by his brother, Alex (JoAnn); children Anne Meyer Ruppel (Paul), Northfield, Minn., Robert Meyer, Sun Prairie, Wis., Jennifer Gabriel (Mark), Gnawbone, Ind., and Thomas Meyer, Nashville, Tenn.
His grandchildren are Emily Ruppel (Stephanie), Santiago, Chile, Tom Ruppel (Emily), Denver, Colo., Caitlin Ruppel (Sam), Berkeley, Calif., Hannah Lawrence (Scott), Irmo, S.C., and Brian Lawrence, Central, S.C. Robert is survived by nieces and nephews Elizabeth Rowland, Texas, Katie Grimes (Jeff), Iowa, John Fraser (Peg), Iowa, Margee Michaelis (Peter), Florida, and Jeff Meyer (Anne), Florida.
Robert loved to swim, golf and bike, and completed the Iowa RAGBRAI eight times. When he moved to Santa Fe, he continued to bike for many years. He was an avid reader of all history and current events and was passionate about the Iowa Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers.
Funeral arrangements are pending with private burial in Santa Fe, N.M., at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Mercy Medical Center Foundation, Cedar Rapids.
