Robert Louis Faas was born Feb. 2, 1929, in Pilot township near Millersburg, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Irene (Hinrichs) Faas. He was baptized on Feb. 3, 1929, at home and confirmed in 1943 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Millersburg. He graduated from Millersburg High School in 1947 and later attended Kirkwood College. Robert was united in marriage to Maxine Grimm on June 12, 1949, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Millersburg. To this union, they were blessed with nine children. Maxine died Jan. 12, 1975. Robert later was united in marriage to Patricia Brennan Carder on May 30, 1976, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Millersburg.
Robert was a lifelong farmer, along with working as a fieldsman for several Iowa County assessors, Poweshiek Water Association, statistician for Iowa Crop and Livestock Reporting Service and U.S. Department of Agriculture. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Millersburg, where he had been active as a council member, chairman, trustee and elder, until he transferred to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Robert enjoyed fishing and sharing the farm with the grandchildren, traveling, going to flea markets, collecting toys and fire trucks and working in his shop on a project or carpentry.
Robert passed away Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City at the age of 88 years following a farm accident.
He is survived by his wife Patricia; seven children, Denise Terry of Davenport, Diane Davis of Coralville, Douglas (Judi) Faas of Evansdale, Dale (Lauri) Faas of Ladora, Darcy (Doug) Knoll of Millersburg, Daniel Faas of Ladora and Donita (Tim) Huegel of Newton; four stepchildren, Linda Bock of Tiffin, Dan (Connie) Carder of Coralville, Scott (Jackie) Carder of Williamsburg and James (Sandy) Carder of Gray, Maine; 31 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Doris) Faas of Cedar Rapids, and three sisters, Marilyn Pruess of Clarence, Ruth Ann Gorsh of North English and the Rev. Esther Dant of Arden Hills, Minn.; a brother-in-law, Robert (Carolyn) Brennan of Deep River; and a sister-in-law, Elaine Faas of Ames;
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Maxine; two infant sons; a sister, Phyllis Bauer; a brother, Donald Faas; and stepson, Doug Carder.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg. Pastor Tom Ogilvie will officiate. Burial will be in the Millersburg Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg. Memorials may be given to Lake Iowa Nature Center or St. Paul Lutheran Church.
