ROBERT L. KALOUS Cedar Rapids Robert Lee Kalous, 79, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, surrounded by his loving family and the blessings of Jesus Christ. UPDATE: Due to weather conditions, the graveside service will be held inside Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6.
Robert was born May 27, 1937, to Lawrence and Eva (Robinson) Kalous in Iowa City. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1956 and was a cross country state champion. In February 1957, Robert married Loretta McLain. Together they had four children, and later divorced. One of his earliest jobs was a mechanic position at Tutt's Standard, which led to his successful and well-established career as a mechanic for more than 40 years. He also was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years.
Robert served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy Reserves for eight years. He was active in many organizations, including Eagles Club, Swisher American Legion, Knights of Columbus, P.W.P., John Deere Defenders Club, St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, NAEFE, the Swisher and Oxford American Legion, and International Harvester Tractor Club.
"Grandpa Bob" was an avid and dedicated supporter of his children and grandchildren, attending countless band and vocal concerts, parades, sporting events and graduations. He always told his family to never give up and always have fun. Often Robert could be found refurbishing his collection of Farmall, Allis Chalmers and International Harvester tractors at his peaceful family farm outside of Mount Vernon.
Robert is survived by his beloved children, Laurie Randall, Angela Hunter, Barbara (Michael) Drake and Bob (Christy) Kalous; his significant other of 33 years, Marie Taylor; eight grandchildren, Nicole (Dan) Schaefer, Jayme Hunter, Ashley Drake, Valerie Drake, Samantha Hunter, Dillon Drake, Bailey Kalous and Riley Kalous; four great-grandchildren, Addison Hunter, Avery Schaefer, Benjamin Drake and Ayden Drake; siblings, Rosalie Kalous and Steve Kalous; brother-in-law, Bob Hawkins; and aunts, Mary and Helen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Dave Randall; and siblings, Patsy, Carol, Connie and Larry.
Robert Kalous was known for his sharp wit, clever humor, humbleness and his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone he met.
He will be forever remembered as a true gentleman and a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Robert's warm laugh and gentle smile touched the hearts of all who knew him.
