Robert Gordon Horner, 87, of Mechanicsville passed away at his home after a short illness, with his family at his side, on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014. Services for Bob will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the Mechanicsville First
Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Jaymee Glenn-Burns. The family will greet friends Monday from 4 until 7 p.m. at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices in Mount Vernon. Burial: Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville, with mil-itary honors.
Bob graduated from the College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis in 1950, and owned and operated the mortuary and furniture store in Mechanicsville for many years.
He was a member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association. Bob worked for the telephone company for over 50 years.
Survivors include Arline, his wife of 64 years; son, David, and his wife, Kathy, of Waukee; son, Terry of Mechanicsville; two grandchildren, Ryan and Katelyn Horner of Waukee; a sister, Jacqueline Covey and her husband, Gene, of Hot Springs, Ark.; and nieces, Michael Kay (Glen) of Hot Springs, Ark., and Dawn of Denver, Colo.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Jenny; and his daughter, Linda (2005).
Bob was born Dec. 7, 1926, in Cedar Rapids and graduated from the
Mechanics-ville High School. He wore many hats in Me-chanicsville, a town he loved. He was secretary/treasurer of the Mechanicsville Business Men's Club for 17 years and a member of the Lions Club, Masons, where he served as worshipful master, and Eastern Star, where he was a worthy patron.
In his spare time, he cheered for the Cubs, Bulls, Hawkeyes and loved a good crossword puzzle. Bob also was very proud of his service as an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War and his membership in Busch-Dennis American Legion Post 309.
Bob will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
Memorials in Bob's honor may be made to the Mechanicsville First Presbyterian Church and the Mechanicsville Fire and Ambulance Volunteers.
