Robert Hobart, 96, of Iowa City, formerly of Moravia, passed away Friday, June 30, 2017, at Lantern Park Specialty Care in Coralville.
He was born in Centerville, Iowa, on Nov. 16, 1920, to Oscar and Alice (Norton) Hobart. He married Mary Adams in Centerville on May 29, 1942.
He is survived by his children, Robert Hobart (Jane) of North Liberty, Phillip Hobart (Linda) of Cedar Rapids, Susan Dirks (Greg) of Iowa City and Albert of Ogden; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Oscar Hobart Jr.; and a sister, Alice Montis of Waukee.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; four sisters; three brothers; and five grandchildren.
Robert was very proud of his family's arm services history, as all of his brothers served together in World War II. Robert was among the first to land in France on D-Day on June 6, 1944. He was assigned to the Army Engineers and saw action in France, Belgium and Germany. He was awarded the presidential unit citation, French unit citation, ETO Ribbon with four silver and bronze stars and a bronze arrowhead.
He was well-known as owner-operator of Zephyr Cleaners in Centerville for over 50 years.
Robert loved hunting and especially fishing. He sold his handmade fishing worms to individuals around the world and they are still being used to this day. He enjoyed watching Hawkeye football and basketball with his family.
His love of family, unique sense of humor and storytelling will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 7, at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Father Bill Hubmann officiating. Burial will follow in Haines Cemetery north of Centerville. A visitation will take place on Friday at the funeral home in Centerville, with the family greeting friends from 1 to 2 p.m.
Memorials have been established to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, IA 52544.
