Robert C. Hesseltine, 86, of Iowa City, left this world with the loving embrace of his family on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, at the VA Health Care System in Iowa City. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at Lensing's Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Rd., Coralville. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa City, with military rights provided by the Coralville American Legion, assisted by other local military organizations. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VA Palliative Care Services.
Robert was born Aug. 7, 1932, in Thornbug, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Anita (Spenler) Hesseltine. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1951 and was in active duty during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Marlene Tschantz on May 24, 1953, in Wayland, Iowa. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he attended Cedar Rapids Barber College, graduating in 1956. He opened Bob's Barber Shop in 1958 in Iowa City. He opened his next shop, Twin Image Barber Stylist Salon, in 1976, with his twin daughters, Rhonda and Roxanne. He sold the business in 1984 to his daughter and son-in-law, Doug and Laura Warner. He then opened the Hairport Barber Shop located next to Twin Image in 1980. He ended his barbering career and retired in early 2017.
Bob was known as "quite the character." He loved to be around people and was famous for telling stories. He loved life and family and had many friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Robert is survived by his wife, Marlene; sisters, Lois Ann Kaska (Walter) of Denver, Colo., and Nelda Perkins of Waverly; proud father of six children, Laura Warner (Douglas) of Coralville, Rhonda Wacker (Mike) of Iowa City, Roxanne Caslavka (Jim) of Iowa City, only son, Ted Hesseltine (Sandy) of Iowa City, Julie Morris (Tom) of Tulsa, Okla., and Robin Godfrey of North Liberty; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Anita Hessltine of Washington, Iowa.
