Robert Hasler, 76, died on Monday evening, Feb. 1, 2021, at his home following an extended battle with dementia.

Funeral services will be held later in the spring of 2021. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, has taken Robert and his family into their care. Surviving is his wife, Sharon; his daughter, Kim (Kyle) Baldwin, Acworth, Ga.; three grandsons, Caleb, Kane and Colby; two sisters, Esther Kirby, Prarieburg, and Martha Lantermans, Marion; and three brothers, P.J. (Betty) Hasler, Monticello, Ken (Bev Harms) Hasler, Anamosa, and Lester (Yolanda) Hasler, Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Susanna Ellison, Anamosa; and a brother, James Hasler, Forestville, Conn.

Robert Matthew Hasler was born March 15, 1944, at the John McDonald Hospital, Monticello, Iowa. He was the son of James and Kathrine Meyer, Hasler. Bob attended the Jones county rural schools and the Monticello Community high school. He started farming in 1961 with his mother Kathrine on the Hardscrabble farm after the passing of his father. Bob married Sharon Bader on April 4, 1964, at Peace United Church of Christ. The couple purchased the family farm from Kathrine in 1973 and built a Registered Holstein Dairy Operation. He was (since 1877) the 4th generation to own and farm the Hardscrabble Farm. Bob sold the cows in 2003 and retired from active farming in 2016. He enjoyed trout fishing and woodworking. He attended the United Church of Monticello. Bob, even as the memories faded, remained true to his nature and personality. He would still smile, laugh and when he still could, share a hand-picked flower for those who came to visit.
