Robert B. Gallagher, 91, of Decatur, Ga., formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Sunrise of Decatur Senior Living Facility. Per Robert's wishes, his body has been cremated. A graveside service with military honors will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
Robert is survived by his grandchildren, Miria (Frederik) Cambie of Decatur, Ga., Martha "Marty" Mukasa of Decatur, Ga., Marjorie Mukasa of New York City and Michael Mukasa of Uganda; twin great-grandchildren, Chiana and Sebastian Cambie; nieces, Yvonne (Gordon) Pollock of Travelers Rest, S.C., Roberta (Henry) Davis of Lehigh Acres, Fla., and Marilyn Guiles of Cicero, N.Y.; and nephew, David (Meria) Bradford of Port Huron, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 2002; adopted daughter, Ethel Mukasa; and sister, Leta Gallagher Wakeman.
Robert was born Sept. 30, 1922, in Syracuse, N.Y., the son of Edward and Celia (Bergman) Gallagher. He married Helen E. Wise on Feb. 17, 1945, in Santa Ana, Calif. Robert served in the United States Marine Corps as a staff sergeant gunner during World War II. Robert went on to graduate from the University of Iowa and worked as a mechanical engineer for Rockwell Collins for over 25 years.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was a past member of the Masons and the Shriners, as well as a proud member of the American Legion.
Robert loved woodworking. He enjoyed refinishing the antique furniture his wife collected. He also enjoyed playing golf.
Memorial contributions may be made in Robert's name to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
