Robert Edwin “Ed” Shearer, 92, of Columbia passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at Boone Hospital. A celebration of Ed’s life is being planned for this summer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Details will be updated when they become available.
Ed was born on July 4, 1931 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Graydon Shearer and Eva Marie (Burns) Shearer.
Ed had a career with Square D where he made many lifelong friendships. He enjoyed fishing, camping, boating, spending time at the cabin and with his grandkids. He enjoyed traveling, going on cruises and eating good food. He enjoyed country music all his life and in his later years, through the influence of a friend, he came to appreciate classical music as well.
Ed is survived by Marlene Haugen, his significant partner of over 25 years, his children Sheryl Hasson; Jim (Betty) Shearer; Deb Hyke; Karen Brown and their mother: Loretta (Foubert) Shearer; one sister: Linda (Lee) Thompson; a beloved kitty: Kara and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition, Ed had a bonus family Shelly Sappington (Keith) and Lisa Mantia (Jim). He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter.
Memorials in Ed’s honor may be made to the Central Missouri Humane Society.
